But as upset as she was by the loss of her father – a loving parent, a loyal veteran, a beloved member of the community, and a faithful mentor and friend to everyone he met – Heather was comforted by the fact that her father, at least, never had to say goodbye to his beloved dog. Such a separation would have been just as painful for Gunner, who could never bear to be far from his human best friend.
“I said I didn’t know what was going to be the most traumatic for him,” Heather said. “Try to take him to put an end to his suffering, or if you let him live through the death of his father. I think it’s going to kill him anyway. We knew they were going to leave together. We just didn’t know they were going to be separated by hours.”
“Gunner couldn’t be without my father,” Heather said. “I think he chose to go with him.”
