Dalmatian is going to have 3 puppies – she has a record litter of 18
When your dog is pregnant, you want to know how many puppies you need to prepare for.
After all, this number can affect everything from potential adopters to calving space. It will help you determine if you will need help raising them all or if you can take care of the puppies yourself.
Cecilia Lanton-Bunkergot was the human mother of a Miley Dalmation. Cecilia and her husband were very happy to welcome new puppies into the family when they found out Miley was pregnant.
The vet supervising the gestation had predicted a litter of three puppies, but Miley’s belly seemed a little too big for that. It turned out that Miley’s litter was much larger than three puppies.
Let’s not be too the vet… it takes a lot of training to get a DVM. You have to get an undergraduate degree of four years, then an additional four years of veterinary school PLUS an internship. I mean, these guys are very well trained.
So maybe the vet was working with faulty equipment or maybe the vet is not specialized in prenatal care. Anyway, Miley and her breeders were going to have a surprise.
Miley the Dalmate gave birth to 18 puppies instead of the 3 planned…#whoops
Not only was the litter made up of 18 puppies, but it also set the world record for the largest litter of dogs ever born. The average litter of a Dalmatian is eight or ten puppies. The first pregnancy of a dog normally produces fewer puppies than the average. But it’s all worth it. This looks rather happy with herself.
This may remind you of the movie 101 Dalmations. If so, you are not alone. Miley and her puppies are always compared to dogs in the classic Disney movie.
Based on her size during gestation, Miley’s breeders estimated the number of puppies at about 15 or 16, as did Pongo and Perdita in the film. But Miley and Astro blew that fictitious record.
It took 13 hours of work for the puppies to be born.
The litter of 18 puppies includes 12 females and 6 males. These brothers are twice as numerous as the others, I wonder how this will affect their childhood (their childhood of puppies?).
As there are many little boys, Cecilia and her husband help the new mother take care of the puppies. There is always a supply of hot milk for the little ones.
As there are many puppies, breeders have placed a temporary tinted dot on their neck. These will be replaced by necklaces upon arrival. Meanwhile, Miley’s record has been set by the Australian National Kennel Club as the largest litter in Australian history on more than 40,000 births of colorblind people.
