Veteran chooses service dog as best man at “marriage”

When Justin Lansford and his girlfriend Carol Balmes decided to get married, Justin wanted his best friend to be his best man. Justin immediately knew who to choose: his service dog, Gabe!

Justin and Gabe met for the first time in 2012.
In 2012, Justin was a soldier deployed in Afghanistan. Tragically, Justin lost his leg because of a trapped machine and he returned to the United States.

“I was a paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne Division and we were in eastern Afghanistan in early 2012,” Justin told ABC News. “We hit a trapped machine that completely knocked over my truck. I had cut the femurs bilaterally, which resulted in the amputation of my left leg.

Justin needed a service dog to help him cope with his post-traumatic stress disorder. He turned to Warrior Canine Connections.

Justin was paired with two-year-old Gabe, and the two immediately agreed!
“He helps me from one thing to another. I can use it as a stable surface that I can rely on when I go to the ground, “said Justin. “If I fall, he’ll run next to me and I can use him to push him to get up off the ground.”

In 2014, Justin decided to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Carol. He raised the issue on Veteran’s Day and Gabe helped him with his proposal. Carol quickly said yes! Open next Page To See Video
